Overview

At the Law School, we are committed to learning as a collaborative enterprise. Our program challenges students to grow intellectually and professionally. Faculty members engage with students as partners as well as serving as sources of knowledge. A foremost concern of the Law School is to provide assistance in "learning how to learn." Students prepare for a challenging and rewarding professional life equipped with skills in legal counseling, advocacy, and decision-making. Students are encouraged to study law and legal institutions as integral parts of larger social, political-economic, and ecological systems.

The Law School curriculum is rich and diverse. Classroom experiences include vigorous discussion in traditional Socratic classroom settings, as well as lectures, seminars, informal small group discussions and individually supervised field and library research projects. Writing skills are honed in small groups and on a one-to-one basis with experienced faculty and practitioners. Students participate in experiential clinical courses that provide a wide array of opportunities including real courtroom experience, simulation clinics, and externship opportunities. All students in the full-time JD program must enroll for at least 12 credits during the three-year program. A normal semester course load is 14 to 16 credit hours. Through rigorous, stimulating, and challenging study, the Law School's graduates are well-prepared to work in any jurisdiction in the country.... [-]

Peking University School of Transnational Law (STL) offers a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree, pursuant to a three-year full-time program based on a J.D. curriculum comparable to that offered in the United States. The language of instruction is English. The program also includes an elective fourth-year course, devoted to a survey of Chinese law, with instruction in Mandarin Chinese. Courses in Chinese law are mainly open to students from Mainland China or whose first language is Chinese.

Both curriculums emphasize lawyering skills and knowledge for the 21st century: (i) transnational law and practice, (ii) cross-cultural competence, and (iii) the professional responsibilities of lawyers in these contexts. No law school anywhere better equips graduates for the private sector, public sector, or public interest legal work in China, the United States, the United Kingdom, or British Commonwealth nations.... Students enrolled in the Corporate Compliance Concentration will receive instruction and training to prepare them for practices that focus on or involve compliance work. Although the Concentration focuses on financial industry compliance, it encompasses other areas of compliance that are commonly encountered by corporate lawyers/lawyers representing corporate clients.

Faculty Concentration Advisors and Advisement

Professors Juliana Campagna, J. Scott Colesanti, and Ronald J. Colombo serve as faculty concentration advisors for this Concentration.

Guidance from a student’s concentration faculty advisor is an important element of successful completion of the Concentration. A concentration faculty advisor must approve a student’s enrollment in the Concentration. Students should meet with their advisor as soon as they find themselves interested in the Concentration, but in no event later than the course selection deadline for their fourth semester of study (or fifth semester of study for part-time students). An advisor may permit a student to enroll in the Concentration at a later date, but only after determining that the student can realistically meet the requirements of the Concentration prior to graduation.... Hamad Bin Khalifa University’s Juris Doctor (JD) program delivers a unique model of graduate legal education to meet the needs of Qatar and the region.

The JD is the first-of-its-kind graduate law degree in the MENA region and has been created through a strategic partnership with Northwestern University School of Law. It is the standard first professional graduate law degree in the U.S. as well as an increasing number of other countries. A JD differs from an undergraduate law degree in that it targets individuals who already hold an undergraduate degree, which can be in any subject (including law). The JD is comparable with the best of those offered internationally and equips its graduates with a high level of legal knowledge and the skills that go with such knowledge, thereby enabling them to make the most of a wide range of career options in the public sector, multinational institutions, and in academia. Program Focus An in-depth look at the conceptual theory of law: why are laws made and how have the different legal systems around the law developed? How do different systems differ and where are the similarities? Students will be given a comprehensive education in the function of law, whether in Qatar, the region or internationally. There will be considerable focus on the application of the law, ensuring that practical skills are developed, in addition to a theoretical understanding of legal issues and concepts. Curriculum General courses focusing on the foundational principles needed to successfully practice law in the... [-]
